Spring and Fall: to a young child
In 2007 the Iowa Choral Directors Association and Iowa Composers Forum choral commissioned me to compose a new choral piece for a high school level choir using the text of Gerard Manley Hopkins' text "Spring and Fall, to a young child," which is something I've always wanted to set to music. It was performed in a workshop at the ICDA 2007 conference, then given a proper premiere Saturday Nov 3 by the St. Ambrose University Choir in the Allaert Auditorium on the St. Ambrose campus, and sung again by the Chamber Singers and University Chorale of St. Ambroseon November 18 at St. John Vianney Catholic Church in Bettendorf, IA. The conductor wrote: "My students are finding a great deal in your song. Before we sang Saturday I shared with them your thoughts from the e-mail you sent a few weeks back. Afterward one of my altos came up to me and said that she felt transformed during the performance, thinking of her grandmother who passed away last summer. She said she had never felt that way before. Thank you for a beautiful work."
A review in the January 2008 ICF Newsletter said, "About the highest compliment that I can pay a composer is that it seemed as though they 'needed' to write the work. I sensed that Mr. Scheer's connection to the text was at such an intimate level, that he needed to write this choral piece. The work was absolutely gorgeous, and I sensed that Mr. Scheer meant every note. The delicate piano accompaniment was a perfect compliment to the singers."
An electronic composition that appears on the CFAMC CD ...from everlasting to everlasting... Jeremy Begbie says "This is music that will disturb your imagination and delight your heart - a rare combination."
