    This energetic Guatemalan song first appeared in Global Songs for Worship (2010). Since then, I have created various arrangements that allow it to be led authentically in other ways. The piano accompaniment captures the rhythmic energy of the song. The choir, flute, and percussion arrangement is perfect for churches that have a flutist who likes a challenge!

    Wendell Kimbrough’s setting of Psalm 104 won the COS New Psalm Contest in 2014. Since then, I’ve arranged this song for strings, brass, and choir. These arrangements bring out a whole new majestic side to the song.

    This song was commissioned for the World Communion of Reformed Churches 2017 General Council. It takes the council’s theme (“transformed and transforming; renewed and renewing”) and puts it in prayer form: “Renew us, O God.” This prayer serves as a refrain that can be sung joyfully, as on the recording, or introspectively, like a Taizé chorus.

    “Ever-Tender Shepherd” is a musical “collect prayer”–a prayer which petitions God based on God’s attributes. In this case, attributes of Jesus are connected to the needs of the world. We ask Christ, the Shepherd, to gather scattered refugees, for example. This seemed a good way to address the needs of the world without taking sides or naming issues so specifically that the song would be obsolete by the time it was used. I’m especially fond of the third verse. But who am I to play favorites?

But a deeper look shows a hymn that recognizes both the struggles of life and the hope of faith in Christ. This Just Add People arrangement brings out the lament of the verses with a minor harmonization, switching to a major key when the refrain proclaims confidently: No storm can shake my inmost calm.”

    This setting of Psalm 67 is in what I’ve dubbed a “modern medieval” style–stately but with a strong rhythmic spine. One of the interesting features of the song is that the verse mirrors the chorus, but one step up. This modulatory sleight of hand makes each return of the chorus sound inevitable but surprising.
