PUER NOBIS is one of the great hymn tunes of the Church and is matched with many texts, including “On Jordan’s Banks the Baptist’s Cry” and “O Splendor of God’s Glory Bright.” (This arrangement is available with either text.) I tried to bring out its folk song flavor with a piano accompaniment that is energetic. I feel like this arrangement brings out the sprightly nature of this tune in a way that often gets lost in the four-part hymnal.

Piano accompaniment for congregational singing, with C instrument descant. Purchase price allows you to make as many copies as you need for your ensemble.

Wendell Kimbrough’s rendition of “Once in Royal David’s City” recasts this carol in a folksy style that allows it to speak like a ballad rather than a fanfare. The strings add a further layer of of emotion to the singing.

Arrangement for strings to accompany congregational singing. Download includes score and parts for violins 1 and 2, viola, and cello. Purchase price allows you to print as many copies as needed for your ensemble.

This beloved Christmas carol arrangement was commissioned by violinist Sarah York. She needed a contemplative prelude for a Christmas service. In this arrangement, the familiar carol tune is passed back and forth between piano and violin (or cello), creating mesmerizing layers of echoed melody.

There is perhaps no hymn more serenely beautiful than “Peace, Perfect Peace.” Edward Bickersteth’s text doesn’t dismiss the troubles of this world, but instead sees them as an opportunity to hear Jesus’ call to rest in him. George Caldbeck’s melody is simple, yet powerful. This arrangement builds on this beautiful simplicity, growing verse after verse and ending on a note of confidence.

Wendell Kimbrough’s setting of Psalm 104 won the COS New Psalm Contest in 2014. Since then, I’ve arranged this song for strings, brass, and choir. These arrangements bring out a whole new majestic side to the song.

Rubem Amorese and Toninho Zemuner write beautiful congregational songs in their native Portuguese. Their song on Psalm 125, “Proteçao,” is a beautiful testament to the protection that surrounds God’s people.

This choral/congregation setting of Psalm 13 began its life as Alas! And Did My Savior Bleed (which, by the way, I think you should sing in your church this upcoming Lent). When The Choral Scholars and I were doing the initial reading sessions, I decided that the arrangement of the tune MARTYRDOM would fit both texts.

Choral anthem for SATB choir and piano. Purchase price allows you to make as many copies as you need for your choir.

Wendell Kimbrough’s setting of Psalm 31 is simple, but also profound, translating the desperate prayer of the Psalm into fresh language that sings well. I have written an SATB version, a choral descant, and a flute descant.

I first heard “Ready My Heart” on Steve Bell’s CD Each Rare Moment a number of years ago and immediately fell in love with it. Lois Shuford has composed a unique Advent song, a devotional text in which we pray that our hearts would be prepared to cradle the coming Savior. Below is a video of Larry Figueroa and me introducing the song.

It was my great pleasure to work with Liz Vic, Wen Reagan, Bruce Benedict, and Lester Ruth to write this alternative to “Away in A Manger.” Most Christmas songs are all sweetness, with the baby Jesus sleeping contentedly, “no crying he makes.” This song turns that idyllic picture on its head, revealing the drama and stress of a real family with a real baby who was the target of a jealous politician’s wrath, forcing them to flee “away from the manger” to the safety of Egypt.

You can hear Liz Vice’s original recording below. Above is a click track demo of the string arrangement.

    https://musicblog.gregscheer.com/sanna_sannanina-flute.mp3

“Sanna, Sannanina” is a delightful South African song that is perfect for joyous Palm Sunday processions. Here I’ve added a flute descant that is almost as rhythmic as the djembe accompaniment. The recording above is an instrumental version with flute and djembe; this descant would also work over the congregation, choir, or praise team singing the song.

Descants for flute/piccolo. Download also includes SATB hymn with both South African and English texts.
