Originally written for Christopher Webber’s 1 John 1:1-7 hymn, “This We Proclaim About the Word of Life,” this tune is built on a sweeping melodic line and a momentary shift into a different key. In non-technical terms, it’s really pretty!

This is an orphan tune, waiting to be adopted by a text to call its own. If you write lyrics for this melody or pair it with an existing text, please report its use to CCLI or OneLicense and let me know how you’ve used it.

Mary Louise Bringle’s “When Memory Fades” is a beautiful treatment of aging, losing memory and strength. It hits close to home, as my own dad died of Alzheimers. I understand why most people sing this to the well-known FINLANDIA, but I just don’t think that tune fits this poignant text well. And so I offer my own tune to accompany “When Memory Fades” (or a hymn that is still waiting to be written).

Shortly after the mass shootings in Uvalde and Buffalo, David Bjorlin sent an email with a new hymn text, “Teach Us Your Peace.” It addressed the fatigue I was feeling from the seemingly endless cycle of death and denial. I hope David’s text and my newly composed tune will be a life-giving balm amidst a culture so enamored with weapons and so willing to offer our children to the god of untethered freedom.

Like many Black Gospel songs, the beauty of this is that it focuses on one thing (thanksgiving) while allowing for lots of flexibility. The lead singer can improvise new verses in the moment (“Been so good,” “Saved my soul,” etc); the Just Add People! piano arrangement is equally flexible, with an optional modulation and chord symbols for guitar, bass, and other instruments.

    Piano accompaniment for congregational singing.

“The First Nowell” is the quintessential Christmas carol and a classic folk tune, but too many arrangements fetter the flowing melody with four-part harmony. My approach is simple: let the melody sing itself and support it with an accompaniment that keeps things moving forward. After a brief string intro, it starts small–just guitar and solo voice–and then builds momentum over the song’s 6 verses.

This arrangement of THE KING OF GLORY COMES works with the familiar text by Willard F. Jabusch as well as Greg’s Palm Sunday text, “Hosanna in the Highest.” Optional flute descants add to the Klezmer feel of this rhythmic tune.

Arrangements for strings and brass are also available with the alternate text.

“The Sermon on the Mount” contains some of Jesus’ most beloved words, but there are surprisingly few songs that take up these themes. As some settings of “The Beatitudes” have fallen into disuse it seemed the time was ripe for a new one. The verses are nearly verbatim scripture and the chorus is exceedingly easy to learn.

PowerPoint slides for congregational singing are available from Digital Songs & Hymns.

“The Meadow Sings” knits together nature, music, and the Creator so beautifully it makes all three seem part of the same chorus.

“The Peaceable Kingdom,” like the Edward Hicks painting from which I borrowed the song’s title, is a rendering of the famous Isaiah 11:1-9 passage that describes predator and prey playing together, led by a little child. At Christmas, we understand this Child to be Christ, the little child who came into the world to usher in an age of peace.

While planning a service based on the story of Moses’s birth and adoption by Pharaoh’s daughter, I came across a once-popular hymn by William Hammond called “Awake and Sing the Song.” (The original publication has no less than 14 verses!) Naturally, I wrote a new tune for it. I knew the text called for a tune as rough as a sea chanty, as epic as a murder ballad, and as joyously raucous as a shape-note hymn. What I came up with is a pentatonic melody that is equal parts “What Wondrous Love” and “Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner.” You can hear the piano accompaniment in the video below:
