Thank You, Lord
[audio mp3="https://gregscheer.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/thank_you_lord-piano.mp3"][/audio]
Like many Black Gospel songs, the beauty of this is that it focuses on one thing (thanksgiving) while allowing for lots of flexibility. The lead singer can improvise new verses in the moment (“Been so good,” “Saved my soul,” etc); the Just Add People! piano arrangement is equally flexible, with an optional modulation and chord symbols for guitar, bass, and other instruments.Piano accompaniment for congregational singing.

The song draws on images Edwards uses in writings such as Religious Affections and The Excellency of Christ and from 2 Chronicles 20:21: “After he (Jehoshaphat) had advised the people, he appointed people to sing to the Lord and praise him for the beauty of his holiness.”

The options may be chosen on the product page[audio mp3="https://gregscheer.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/scheer-the_first_nowell.mp3"][/audio]“The First Nowell” is the quintessential Christmas carol and a classic folk tune, but too many arrangements fetter the flowing melody with four-part harmony. My approach is simple: let the melody sing itself and support it with an accompaniment that keeps things moving forward. After a brief string intro, it starts small–just guitar and solo voice–and then builds momentum over the song’s 6 verses.

As some settings of “The Beatitudes” have fallen into disuse it seemed the time was ripe for a new one. The verses are nearly verbatim scripture and the chorus is exceedingly easy to learn.
PowerPoint slides for congregational singing are available from Digital Songs & Hymns.

The Meadow Sings
[audio mp3="https://gregscheer.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/moody-the_meadow_sings.mp3"][/audio]“The Meadow Sings” knits together nature, music, and the Creator so beautifully it makes all three seem part of the same chorus.

The Nicene Creed
Price range: $0.00 through $25.00 Select options This product has multiple variants. The options may be chosen on the product pagehttps://musicblog.gregscheer.com/wp-content/uploads/wcc_nicene_creed.mp3
This musical setting of the Nicene Creed was composed at the request of the World Council of Churches to be sung at their 2025 conference, celebrating the 1700th anniversary of the Council of Nicaea. The verses likely require a cantor, as the music follows the contours of the creed’s text verbatim. The refrain, however, is a simple, repeated, “We believe” for the congregation.
Note: This text follows the version used by the WCC. At the infamous “filioque clause,” you may choose the alternative, “[Holy Spirit,] who proceeds from the Father and the Son.” You will find some differences between the printed music and the demo, as the recording was based on an earlier draft of the song.

The Peaceable Kingdom
[audio mp3="https://gregscheer.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/the_peacable_kingdom.mp3"][/audio]“The Peaceable Kingdom,” like the Edward Hicks painting from which I borrowed the song’s title, is a rendering of the famous Isaiah 11:1-9 passage that describes predator and prey playing together, led by a little child. At Christmas, we understand this Child to be Christ, the little child who came into the world to usher in an age of peace.
