The Advent text “Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesus” is sung to several tunes. Full of longing and melancholy, BEACH SPRING emphasizes the now- and not-yet-ness of Advent. This arrangement could also be used with other texts set to BEACH SPRING, including “What a Friend We Have in Jesus” and “Come, Ye Sinners, Poor and Needy.”

This Just Add People arrangement includes a fresh piano accompaniment for congregational singing as well as optional parts for strings and recorder (or other treble C instrument). After an a cappella third verse, an upward key change adds a sense of confidence and conviction to the final verse.

“O Sacred Head, Now Wounded” is the quintessential Passion hymn. These descants can be played by a variety of treble or bass clef instruments, together or separately, and are also flexible in how they are used within the song. For example, I have used the descants as an extended introduction and brought them back on the final verse of singing. Email me for other transpositions that would be useful in your church.

Wen Ti (The Flute Plays) was written in the 9th century. It describes beautiful bamboo flute music coming from a nearby home; the poet wonders who is playing the lovely tune. The flowing pentatonic melody is used here with new words for various sections of a worship service: call to worship, assurance of pardon, doxology, and benediction.

This arrangement was commissioned for a service at the 2018 Calvin Worship Symposium. You can hear it at the following times in the video:
11:47 Call to Worship: “Lift Your Eyes unto the Hills” (based on Psalm 121 and 124)
21:44 Assurance of Pardon: “God Is Gracious to Forgive” (evoking Colossians 1:12-15)
1:22:56 Doxology “To the One Who’s Shown Us Love” (from Revelation 1:4-6)

Anthem for SATB choir and piano with optional C instrument; includes full score and C instrument part.
