  • Deeper than the Sea

    This rendition of Psalm 36:5-9 is an expansive folk-rock song of praise to the Creator whose love surpasses the grandeur of all creation. There are two versions of the song. First, it is available as a free leadsheet for congregation singing. Next, it is arranged for choir, piano, and congregation, with chord symbols so it can be accompanied by guitar and bass to get that “folk choir” kind of sound. It is a simple arrangement that will only take one rehearsal to learn, but it is by no means simplistic. The choral arrangement is published by GIA. If your church follows the lectionary, this scripture passage comes up on the second week of Epiphany in year C, and in Holy Week every year.

    I had an unfortunate opportunity to reflect on mortality when my friend Christina Mandang was hit by a car. Her sudden and senseless death at the age of 38 reminded me once again how fleeting our lives are. It is truly ashes to ashes and dust to dust, with precious little time in between. The good news is that the God who breathed life into dust to create Adam and who resurrected Jesus from the grave is the same God who has promised to raise us from death to eternal life.

    Wendell Kimbrough’s setting of Mary’s Song captures the wonder, fear, and obedience of Mary’s response to Gabriel’s message. The song is a perfect fit for Advent, Christmas, and Lessons and Carols services. The choral arrangement places the choir alongside folk instruments, which is a lovely marriage for those who lead blended worship.

    Celebrating its 20th anniversary, this song was written for Bellefield Presbyterian Church’s pianist, Jeff Stehle. The lyrics remind us that the “rain” we experience in our lives may be exactly what is needed for us to grow–an idea which took on new meaning when Jeff was diagnosed with cancer. Though he’s in remission, I’d ask that you would say a quick prayer on his behalf when you play this song-just think of it as royalties paid in prayers!

  • O One with God the Father

    William Walsham How is best known as the author of “For All the Saints,” but he wrote almost a hundred other hymns, including “O One with God the Father.” It is a powerful Epiphany text that begins with the theme of Colossians 1:15, “The Son is the image of the invisible God.” Surprisingly few hymns address the oneness of the Father and Son, so it is also appropriate when focusing on the theme “We believe in Jesus Christ his only Son” from the Apostles’ Creed.

    Wendell Kimbrough’s setting of Psalm 104 won the COS New Psalm Contest in 2014. Since then, I’ve arranged this song for strings, brass, and choir. These arrangements bring out a whole new majestic side to the song.

  • Psalm 84: Blessed Beyond Measure

    Trinity Lutheran Church in Owatonna, MN commissioned this song and choral anthem for their centennial celebration. Their choice of Psalm 84 is perfect for such an event: the Psalm is full of wide-eyed wonder about God’s temple, but also trust in God’s presence on the journey of life. What a beautiful theme for a church that has journeyed for 100 years and is looking to its future!

    The song is what I often call a “blender.” That is, a song that can live comfortably in both traditional and contemporary settings: think “In Christ Alone,” “There Is a Redeemer,” etc. This demo leans toward the contemporary with guitars and drums, but the choral arrangement leans more traditional. Ultimately, I think it will be right at home in both Trinity’s weekly traditional and contemporary services.
