Thank You, Lord
$5.00 Add to cart[audio mp3="https://gregscheer.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/thank_you_lord-piano.mp3"][/audio]Like many Black Gospel songs, the beauty of this is that it focuses on one thing (thanksgiving) while allowing for lots of flexibility. The lead singer can improvise new verses in the moment (“Been so good,” “Saved my soul,” etc); the Just Add People! piano arrangement is equally flexible, with an optional modulation and chord symbols for guitar, bass, and other instruments.
Piano accompaniment for congregational singing.

The options may be chosen on the product page[audio mp3="https://gregscheer.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/scheer-the_first_nowell.mp3"][/audio]“The First Nowell” is the quintessential Christmas carol and a classic folk tune, but too many arrangements fetter the flowing melody with four-part harmony. My approach is simple: let the melody sing itself and support it with an accompaniment that keeps things moving forward. After a brief string intro, it starts small–just guitar and solo voice–and then builds momentum over the song’s 6 verses.

The options may be chosen on the product page[audio mp3="https://gregscheer.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/the_kingdom_of_heaven.mp3"][/audio]“The Sermon on the Mount” contains some of Jesus’ most beloved words, but there are surprisingly few songs that take up these themes. As some settings of “The Beatitudes” have fallen into disuse it seemed the time was ripe for a new one. The verses are nearly verbatim scripture and the chorus is exceedingly easy to learn.
PowerPoint slides for congregational singing are available from Digital Songs & Hymns.

The Song of Moses and the Lamb

The options may be chosen on the product page[audio mp3="https://gregscheer.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/moses_and_the_lamb.mp3"][/audio]While planning a service based on the story of Moses’s birth and adoption by Pharaoh’s daughter, I came across a once-popular hymn by William Hammond called “Awake and Sing the Song.” (The original publication has no less than 14 verses!) Naturally, I wrote a new tune for it. I knew the text called for a tune as rough as a sea chanty, as epic as a murder ballad, and as joyously raucous as a shape-note hymn. What I came up with is a pentatonic melody that is equal parts “What Wondrous Love” and “Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner.” You can hear the piano accompaniment in the video below:

While there are many Psalm 23 songs to choose from, this one from Indonesia has a gentle spirit that cuts right to the heart of the Psalm, helping us feel the complete trust the sheep feels for the shepherd. It makes the metaphor personal, so we can offer the words of Psalm 23 as our own prayer.

What Wondrous Love (WONDROUS LOVE)
$5.00 – $25.00 Select options This product has multiple variants. The options may be chosen on the product pagehttps://musicblog.gregscheer.com/what_wondrous_love-piano.mp3
“What Wondrous Love” is so elusively beautiful that composers will likely never tire of writing new arrangements of it. The hymn is a staple of Lent and Holy Week, but is also fitting for a funeral, as it begins with the story of redemption and ends in eternity.
Choose from a fresh piano accompaniment for congregational singing, or a string quartet arrangement combining the simple honesty of folk guitar with the emotional depth of string orchestra.
