Refugee King – strings

$0.00$25.00

It was my great pleasure to work with Liz Vic, Wen Reagan, Bruce Benedict, and Lester Ruth to write this alternative to “Away in A Manger.” Most Christmas songs are all sweetness, with the baby Jesus sleeping contentedly, “no crying he makes.” This song turns that idyllic picture on its head, revealing the drama and stress of a real family with a real baby who was the target of a jealous politician’s wrath, forcing them to flee “away from the manger” to the safety of Egypt.

You can hear Liz Vice’s original recording below. Above is a click track demo of the string arrangement.

1. Away from the manger they ran for their lives.
The crying boy Jesus, a son they must hide.
A dream came to Joseph; they fled in the night.
And they ran, and they ran, and they ran.
And they ran, and they ran, and they ran.

2. No stars in the sky but the Spirit of God
led down into Egypt from Herod to hide.
No place for his parents, no country or tribe.
And they ran, and they ran, and they ran.
And they ran, and they ran, and they ran.

3. Stay near me, Lord Jesus, when danger is nigh,
and keep us from Herods and all of their lies.
I love thee, Lord Jesus, my Refugee King.
And we sing, and we sing, and we sing.
And we sing, and we sing, and we sing.

And we sing, and we sing, and we sing.
Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!
