Thank You, Lord
$5.00 Add to cart[audio mp3="https://gregscheer.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/thank_you_lord-piano.mp3"][/audio]Like many Black Gospel songs, the beauty of this is that it focuses on one thing (thanksgiving) while allowing for lots of flexibility. The lead singer can improvise new verses in the moment (“Been so good,” “Saved my soul,” etc); the Just Add People! piano arrangement is equally flexible, with an optional modulation and chord symbols for guitar, bass, and other instruments.
Piano accompaniment for congregational singing.

The Beauty of Your Holiness

The options may be chosen on the product page[audio mp3="https://gregscheer.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/02-The-Beauty-of-Your-Holiness.mp3"][/audio]This song was written to celebrate the completion of pastor Lou Mitchell’s dissertation, The Experience of Beauty in the Thought of Jonathan Edwards. The song draws on images Edwards uses in writings such as Religious Affections and The Excellency of Christ and from 2 Chronicles 20:21: “After he (Jehoshaphat) had advised the people, he appointed people to sing to the Lord and praise him for the beauty of his holiness.”

The First Nowell

The options may be chosen on the product page[audio mp3="https://gregscheer.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/scheer-the_first_nowell.mp3"][/audio]“The First Nowell” is the quintessential Christmas carol and a classic folk tune, but too many arrangements fetter the flowing melody with four-part harmony. My approach is simple: let the melody sing itself and support it with an accompaniment that keeps things moving forward. After a brief string intro, it starts small–just guitar and solo voice–and then builds momentum over the song’s 6 verses.

The Greg Scheer Songbook, 25th Anniversary Edition
$0.00 – $5.00 Select options This product has multiple variants. The options may be chosen on the product pageIn the early 90s, I was a grad student studying music composition at the University of Pittsburgh. By day I wrote esoteric modern compositions and by night I was a singer-songwriter performing in clubs and coffee houses. On Sundays, I attended Bellefield Presbyterian Church, singing in the choir and playing with the praise band. When the music director retired, I discovered he had been paving the way for me to be his replacement! Little did I know, this part-time worship position at my church would lead to two decades of leading and teaching worship.
After singing “Majesty” a hundred or more times, I decided I would refresh Bellefield’s repertoire with some freshly composed praise songs. “As the Deer” was my first. How could I have known it would appear in hymnals and be sung by choirs for the next 25 years? Other songs followed and they were received enthusiastically enough at my own church that I decided to make them available more widely.
I began by publishing The Greg Scheer Song Book, which contained leadsheets and piano accompaniments for ten songs. This might not seem like a monumental undertaking today, but this was in the days of the Mac SE whose screen allowed me to see only tiny portions of a page at a time. A few years later, I determined to record a CD of the songs. Once again, technology was nothing like it is today. I recorded the whole album on a Roland VS-880 with one microphone.
25 years later, I’m pleased to introduce The Greg Scheer Song Book, 25th Anniversary Edition. I am humbled and blessed to have watched these songs find their way in the world: included in hymnals, sung at funerals, and published as solo pieces and choral anthems. I hope those who are new to the GSSB will find something they like and that the collection will bring back fond memories for those who have been singing them since the beginning!

The Kingdom of Heaven
$0.00 – $5.00 Select options This product has multiple variants. The options may be chosen on the product page[audio mp3="https://gregscheer.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/the_kingdom_of_heaven.mp3"][/audio]“The Sermon on the Mount” contains some of Jesus’ most beloved words, but there are surprisingly few songs that take up these themes. As some settings of “The Beatitudes” have fallen into disuse it seemed the time was ripe for a new one. The verses are nearly verbatim scripture and the chorus is exceedingly easy to learn.
PowerPoint slides for congregational singing are available from Digital Songs & Hymns.

The Peaceable Kingdom
$0.00 Add to cart[audio mp3="https://gregscheer.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/the_peacable_kingdom.mp3"][/audio]“The Peaceable Kingdom,” like the Edward Hicks painting from which I borrowed the song’s title, is a rendering of the famous Isaiah 11:1-9 passage that describes predator and prey playing together, led by a little child. At Christmas, we understand this Child to be Christ, the little child who came into the world to usher in an age of peace.

The Song of Moses and the Lamb
$0.00 – $5.00 Select options This product has multiple variants. The options may be chosen on the product page[audio mp3="https://gregscheer.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/moses_and_the_lamb.mp3"][/audio]While planning a service based on the story of Moses’s birth and adoption by Pharaoh’s daughter, I came across a once-popular hymn by William Hammond called “Awake and Sing the Song.” (The original publication has no less than 14 verses!) Naturally, I wrote a new tune for it. I knew the text called for a tune as rough as a sea chanty, as epic as a murder ballad, and as joyously raucous as a shape-note hymn. What I came up with is a pentatonic melody that is equal parts “What Wondrous Love” and “Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner.” You can hear the piano accompaniment in the video below:
