This song is based on a prayer of confession written by John Polhill from the Iona Community. It recognizes how we harm God’s creation, both through personal actions and global systems. The verses, which ask God to bless our lament and grief over how we have cared for his world, are punctuated by the prayer “Kyrie eleison”— “Lord, have mercy.”

This song is an East/West collaboration between Pakistani Eric Sarwar and me. Eric wrote the music based on the shiv ranjni raga and I wrote the text based on Isaiah 11. It is a beautiful statement of longing for God’s promised Kingdom, which at times we can almost taste and other times seems very far off.

“Abana” is sung by Christians throughout the Arabic-speaking world. This haunting, yet vigorous melody beautifully captures the words of the Lord’s Prayer.

My arrangemnt that appears in hymnals makes heavy use of a drone in a hymn texture. That’s lovely, but not like the recordings I’ve heard of the song from Egypt. This SATB and piano arrangement is more along those lines: almost Klezmer-like use of the harmonic scale, a rhythmic accompaniment with lots of rubato, and vocal harmonies that tend to move in thirds.

This anthem is scored for SATB and piano and can be purchased from GIA Music.
