    This arrangement was first written for chamber orchestra for a Lessons & Carols service, then commissioned for full orchestra by the Calvin College Orchestra and their director, Robert Nordling. The recording above is from the Calvin Orchestra’s premiere of the full orchestra version on March 5, 2011.

    While there are many Psalm 23 songs to choose from, this one from Indonesia has a gentle spirit that cuts right to the heart of the Psalm, helping us feel the complete trust the sheep feels for the shepherd. It makes the metaphor personal, so we can offer the words of Psalm 23 as our own prayer.

    The tune KINGSFOLD emphasizes the awe and reverence in this hymn, and this Just Add People arrangement includes a fresh piano accompaniment with a sparkling intro and outro. This piano arrangement is also available with the texts “O Sing a Song of Bethlehem” and “I Heard the Voice of Jesus Say.”

    This string quartet arrangement can also be used with congregational singing and includes lyrical interludes between each verse.

  • Wen Ti (聞笛)/Lift your eyes unto the hills

    Wen Ti (The Flute Plays) was written in the 9th century. It describes beautiful bamboo flute music coming from a nearby home; the poet wonders who is playing the lovely tune. The flowing pentatonic melody is used here with new words for various sections of a worship service: call to worship, assurance of pardon, doxology, and benediction.

    This arrangement was commissioned for a service at the 2018 Calvin Worship Symposium. You can hear it at the following times in the video:

    21:44 Assurance of Pardon: “God Is Gracious to Forgive” (evoking Colossians 1:12-15)

    “What Wondrous Love” is so elusively beautiful that composers while likely never tire of writing new arrangements of it. This arrangement combines the simple honesty of the folk guitar with the emotional depth of string orchestra. The hymn is a staple of Lent and Holy Week, but is also fitting for a funeral, as it begins with the story of redemption and ends in eternity.

    “Abana” is sung by Christians throughout the Arabic-speaking world. This haunting, yet vigorous melody beautifully captures the words of the Lord’s Prayer.

    My arrangemnt that appears in hymnals makes heavy use of a drone in a hymn texture. That’s lovely, but not like the recordings I’ve heard of the song from Egypt. This SATB and piano arrangement is more along those lines: almost Klezmer-like use of the harmonic scale, a rhythmic accompaniment with lots of rubato, and vocal harmonies that tend to move in thirds.

    This anthem is scored for SATB and piano and can be purchased from GIA Music.

    우리 보좌앞에 모였네 (Vision) is a praise song by Hyung-won Koh based on Revelation 7:9-10. It’s a lovely song, and representative of the tuneful, heartfelt worship songs that the Korean church sings. With the help of James Ju and Paul Han, I translated it into English. Later, I revisited the song, adding a piano accompaniment, instrumental parts, and a smooth-as-butter descant for strings and flute.
