Instead of interpreting the royal blessings of Psalm 72 (“Endow the king with your justice” and “may he defend the afflicted”) as the future deeds of a messianic monarch, Linda Bonney Olin portrays them as acts that all of God’s people can, and should do— right now. Her hymn prays to that effect: “Hear our prayer for the ones you’ve called to rule, to judge, to guard, and to govern. May all our leaders be guided by wisdom, mercy, humility, and defending the oppressed!

Who would have thought that a Genevan Psalter-style setting of Psalm 78 in 7/8 time would become my biggest hit? After it won the Calvin09 hymn contest, the song was translated into a half dozen languages and sung from Switzerland to Brazil. It is included in a number hymnals, including the Presbyterian Glory to God and CRC/RCA Lift Up Your Hearts. Your church can get in on the fun, too, by downloading the music here at www.gregscheer.com.

Eugene Peterson argues that we sanitize the Psalms. His Bible translation, The Message, attempted to restore some of the grittiness of the original Hebrew. If this is true in Bible translation, it’s even more true in the way we sing the Psalms–we edit out the difficult verses and sing the rest very piously. “Restore Us, O God!” has a folk music (almost Klezmer) feel that brings out the urgency of Psalm 80’s lament.

Psalm 87 is a beautiful and surprising prophecy of how God will draw all nations to the holy city of Zion. Long-time enemies like Babylon and Philistia will miraculously be welcomed into God’s family. This is a lovely reminder that God’s understanding of insiders and outsiders has always been more gracious than ours. Michael Morgan captures this as “generations to be numbered, sons and daughters yet unborn” are “future heirs of Israel.” Beautiful.

Psalm 90 is a meditation on mortality, judgment, and the eternal love of God. Since Watts already gifted us a rousing rendition of this Psalm, I decided to go in a more tender direction. The chorus focuses on an everlasting God who is with us from generation to generation. Verses 1-2 are about our mortality and the sorrow of sin. But things turn in verse 3 when we remember that, even for all our weakness and failure, God is still very fond of us.

When a Psalm starts with, “The Lord is a God who avenges,” you know it’s going to be a bumpy ride. Indeed, Psalm 94 does not disappoint. It is a tirade against the proud and powerful, decrying their lies and schemes against the defenseless. As this Psalm points out, God sees all. We don’t know when it will happen, but God, our Refuge, will set things right. We pray with the Psalmist that it won’t be long.

Psalm 97 proclaims that God is above all other gods. To our ears, this may seem an odd declaration, but surrounded by polytheistic cultures, the Psalmists took great pains to differentiate Israel’s God from the many neighboring gods of sea, harvest, and fire. Here, the point is made by portraying God as a mysterious, all-powerful deity before whom mountains melt like wax. It’s pretty awesome stuff, really.

I first heard “Ready My Heart” on Steve Bell’s CD Each Rare Moment a number of years ago and immediately fell in love with it. Lois Shuford has composed a unique Advent song, a devotional text in which we pray that our hearts would be prepared to cradle the coming Savior. Below is a video of Larry Figueroa and me introducing the song.

This song was written to celebrate the completion of pastor Lou Mitchell’s dissertation, The Experience of Beauty in the Thought of Jonathan Edwards. The song draws on images Edwards uses in writings such as Religious Affections and The Excellency of Christ and from 2 Chronicles 20:21: “After he (Jehoshaphat) had advised the people, he appointed people to sing to the Lord and praise him for the beauty of his holiness.”

This arrangement of THE KING OF GLORY COMES works with the familiar text by Willard F. Jabusch as well as Greg’s Palm Sunday text, “Hosanna in the Highest.” Optional flute descants add to the Klezmer feel of this rhythmic tune.

Arrangements for strings and brass are also available with the alternate text.
