Written to accompany Neal Plantinga’s sermon on Cain and Abel (Genesis 4:1-6) at the 2010 Calvin Worship Symposium and then revamped as a choral anthem for the first Lessons & Carols reading (Genesis 3:8-15), “A Mark of Grace” tells the whole human story–creation, fall and redemption–in the form of a lyrical ballad. You could say it’s a meditative musical meta-narrative.

“Ah, Holy Jesus” is perhaps the most poignant and beautiful music reflection on Jesus’ suffering for our sake. This accessible Just Add People! piano accompaniment provides a bit more movement than the traditional hymn setting, retaining the tune’s prayerful character but keeping the hymn moving forward. The arrangement also sounds wonderful with acoustic guitar playing the included chords.

Isaac Watts immortal text and the lovely tune MARTYRDOM combine in this choral anthem. The choral parts can be learned in one rehearsal, with unison sections, SATB, and simple descants. The piano accompaniment provides the dramatic arc, building until the climax in verse 5.

Choral anthem for SATB choir and piano. Purchase price allows you to make as many copies as you need for your choir.

One of my favorite hymn tunes is O WALY WALY, and one of my favorite hymn texts is “When I Survey the Wondrous Cross.” This Just Add People arrangement combines them and adds an original refrain. This arrangement could also be used with other texts sung to O WALY WALY, either with or without the refrain.

Brightest and Best of the Stars of the Morning,” written by Reginald “Holy, Holy, Holy” Heber in 1811, wonderfully ties together the visit of the Magi with our own offerings to Christ. This Just Add People arrangement uses verses 3 and 4 of Heber’s text and makes a great offertory hymn.

    Piano accompaniment for congregational singing.

Tammy Moody wrote a lovely text about trusting God to be a good father. I like how Tammy approaches the image of God as Father, which is quite out of fashion in some circles. She acknowledges the fear and doubt many of us have in believing we’re children, accepted and loved by a good Heavenly Father.

This tune is called CHARMING FOURTH, because I wrote and rejected three other tune drafts before settling on this one; they say the third time’s the charm, but I was hoping for an exception to that rule. I’m also hoping a talented text writer will stumble upon this tune and give it beautiful words that let it soar.

The chorus of this song is about joy welling up in the soul in praise of the Creator. It is paired with a Renaissance-style hymn with a persistent pulse underneath.
