George Caldbeck’s melody is simple, yet powerful. This arrangement builds on this beautiful simplicity, growing verse after verse and ending on a note of confidence.

Praise to the Lord, the Almighty

First is a free leadsheet. Set in the key of E, it turns the robust hymn into a 6/8 feel that will work for praise bands. Second is a piano accompaniment in the “Just Add People” style, allowing your pianist to add additional sparkle to the congregation’s singing. (These first two arrangements include an optional chorus.) Finally, there is a string quartet/orchestra rendition. This is *only* the introduction, which gives your string players something to dig into before settling into the four-part hymn.

Psalm 102 vacillates between utter despair (“I eat ashes as my food and mingle my drink with tears”) and hope in God’s unchanging love and ability to save. This song mirrors these emotions with biting dissonance and brief moments of repose. The recording above is me playing the cello quartet arrangement on my bass. Below is a demo of the more traditional piano accompaniment.

This song is a slow burn—it sneaks up on you rather than grabbing you by the collar and shaking you. Use it like you would a song from Taizé, to accompany communion or as part of a contemplative service, for example.

Psalm 121: My God, My Guide, My Guard
Psalm 121 is a beautiful Psalm of protection that begins with the words, “I lift my eyes up to the hills.” In keeping with my Pilgrim Psalms project, this song is simple enough that it can be sung without musical notation, as it is written in a leader/echo format which makes it easy to learn: simply listen and sing back.
