Linda Bonney Olin, a frequent collaborator, found her way to my Orphan Tunes page and paired her hymn text “A Guardian’s Prayer/Joseph’s Song” with my tune BLEST BE THOU. I don’t know of any other hymn that so fully explores Joseph’s role as a human father to a heaven-born Savior. Linda notes that this song would fit beautifully with the Matthew 1:18-25 reading in the lectionary on the fourth Sunday of Advent, Year A. And of course, any service exploring Joseph’s part in the Christmas story.

Written to accompany Neal Plantinga’s sermon on Cain and Abel (Genesis 4:1-6) at the 2010 Calvin Worship Symposium and then revamped as a choral anthem for the first Lessons & Carols reading (Genesis 3:8-15), “A Mark of Grace” tells the whole human story–creation, fall and redemption–in the form of a lyrical ballad. You could say it’s a meditative musical meta-narrative.

This song was written to accompany a sermon on the Ten Commandments—not a passage that inspires a lot of songs! But as I researched the service, I kept thinking about the times that God promised to write the law on our hearts. Soon I was at the piano writing this little bonbon of a Gospel chorus, “A New Heart, O God.” It comes in both a “spicy” version full of jazz/gospel harmonies and a “mild” version for churches who aren’t ready for the heat.

This began as a new tune for a text on the Lord’s Prayer by Thomas Troeger called “Let All Who Pray the Prayer Christ Taught.” It gives this 6 verse text some breathing room, creating more space to pray the song. It’s available here for others who would like to write new texts to it. Above is the boring computer playback; belong is a demo using Troeger’s text (from back when I was just learning how to record).

This is an orphan tune, waiting to be adopted by a text to call its own. If you write lyrics for this melody or pair it with an existing text, please report its use to CCLI or OneLicense and let me know how you’ve used it.

This 12-measure Gospel chorus attempts to distill some key elements of the story of Jesus appearing to his disciples on the road to Emmaus. Abide with us. Something about the stranger makes them want to spend more time with him. This is true for us, as well. Something about Jesus compels us to know him more–to abide, to dwell, to stay by his side. Our eyes are opened. The Spirit opens our eyes to Jesus, the Word of God. Our hearts awoken. The disciples, recalling their conversation with Jesus say, “Didn’t our hearts burn within us?” Indeed, Christ wakes something in our hearts that creates a desire for more.

A while back I discovered the Brazilian congregational songwriting duo of Rubem Amorese and Toninho Zemuner. They write beautiful, singable, meaningful songs. In Portuguese. This is a translation of their song  “Adoração,” a simple and heartfelt song of dedication. Below is their original recording.

  • Ah, Holy Jesus (HERZLIEBSTER JESU)

“Ah, Holy Jesus” is perhaps the most poignant and beautiful music reflection on Jesus’ suffering for our sake. This accessible Just Add People! piano accompaniment provides a bit more movement than the traditional hymn setting, retaining the tune’s prayerful character but keeping the hymn moving forward. The arrangement also sounds wonderful with acoustic guitar playing the included chords.

I wrote the tune ALLITERATION as an alternative to RUSTINGTON. It gave me a chance to work out a few musical ideas, and now it’s your chance to pair it with an 8787D text and give it a try in a real life setting.

Psalm 42 and 43 are set to a haunting, melancholic melody that mirrors the poignancy of the original Psalm text. This song continues to be one of the most frequently downloaded songs of the site. An arrangement for choir published is by Augsburg Fortress.
