The options may be chosen on the product page[audio mp3="https://gregscheer.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/coslc-mark_of_grace.mp3"][/audio]Written to accompany Neal Plantinga’s sermon on Cain and Abel (Genesis 4:1-6) at the 2010 Calvin Worship Symposium and then revamped as a choral anthem for the first Lessons & Carols reading (Genesis 3:8-15), “A Mark of Grace” tells the whole human story–creation, fall and redemption–in the form of a lyrical ballad. You could say it’s a meditative musical meta-narrative.

A New Heart, O God
$0.00 – $5.00 Select options This product has multiple variants. The options may be chosen on the product page[audio mp3="https://gregscheer.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/a_new_heart.mp3"][/audio]This song was written to accompany a sermon on the Ten Commandments—not a passage that inspires a lot of songs! But as I researched the service, I kept thinking about the times that God promised to write the law on our hearts. Soon I was at the piano writing this little bonbon of a Gospel chorus, “A New Heart, O God.” It comes in both a “spicy” version full of jazz/gospel harmonies and a “mild” version for churches who aren’t ready for the heat.

A while back I discovered the Brazilian congregational songwriting duo of Rubem Amorese and Toninho Zemuner. They write beautiful, singable, meaningful songs. In Portuguese. This is a translation of their song “Adoração,” a simple and heartfelt song of dedication. Below is their original recording.

Ah, Holy Jesus (HERZLIEBSTER JESU)
$5.00 Add to cart“Ah, Holy Jesus” is perhaps the most poignant and beautiful music reflection on Jesus’ suffering for our sake. This accessible Just Add People! piano accompaniment provides a bit more movement than the traditional hymn setting, retaining the tune’s prayerful character but keeping the hymn moving forward. The arrangement also sounds wonderful with acoustic guitar playing the included chords.

Be Still, God Will Fight Your Battle
$0.00 – $5.00 Select options This product has multiple variants. The options may be chosen on the product pageThis is a relatively little known spiritual that fits beautifully with the crossing of the Red Sea where Moses says, “Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the Lord will bring you today… The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.” (Exodus 14:13-14)
This arrangement isn’t “authentic” or true to a particular stream of African American performance practice, just something that makes it accessible to a group that can read a leadsheet. Below is a video from the service for which I arranged it. Notice that this song segues like butter into “Go Down, Moses.”

Benediction (The Last Word)
$0.00 – $5.00 Select options This product has multiple variants. The options may be chosen on the product pagehttp://musicblog.gregscheer.com/benediction-the_last_word.mp3
The song’s genesis began with some phrases scratched on the back of a church bulletin. The phrase that stuck was “from the postlude to the prelude.” (That’s also the title of a book about church music administration by Randall Bradley.) From there I started to flesh out the kinds of things that could, indeed should, be understood as part of a worshipful life. Some of these seem clear: a playground feels like part of God’s world. But what about a prison?

This Just Add People arrangement uses verses 3 and 4 of Heber’s text and makes a great offertory hymn.
