  • Ah, Holy Jesus (HERZLIEBSTER JESU)

“Ah, Holy Jesus” is perhaps the most poignant and beautiful music reflection on Jesus’ suffering for our sake. This accessible Just Add People! piano accompaniment provides a bit more movement than the traditional hymn setting, retaining the tune’s prayerful character but keeping the hymn moving forward. The arrangement also sounds wonderful with acoustic guitar playing the included chords.

One of my favorite hymn tunes is O WALY WALY, and one of my favorite hymn texts is “When I Survey the Wondrous Cross.” This Just Add People arrangement combines them and adds an original refrain. This arrangement could also be used with other texts sung to O WALY WALY, either with or without the refrain.

Piano accompaniment for congregational singing, including original refrain.

Barton W. Stone (of Stone-Cambell movement fame) wrote only one hymn: “Behold the Love, the Grace of God.” What struck me about Stone’s text is how effusive it is: “My soul’s on fire, it pants to prove the fullness of redeeming love.” Though I decided to write new lyrics, I tried to retain the original text’s first-person awe and gratefulness for Jesus’ sacrifice. This would be a great song for communion or Good Friday. Think of it as a gospel sibling of “When I Survey the Wondrous Cross.”

I had an unfortunate opportunity to reflect on mortality when my friend Christina Mandang was hit by a car. Her sudden and senseless death at the age of 38 reminded me once again how fleeting our lives are. It is truly ashes to ashes and dust to dust, with precious little time in between. The good news is that the God who breathed life into dust to create Adam and who resurrected Jesus from the grave is the same God who has promised to raise us from death to eternal life.

There are only a handful of great Palm Sunday hymns, especially ones that can be sung during a palm processional. “Hosanna in the Highest!” is a stately hymn with an easily-learned chorus and narrative verses that move dramatically toward Jerusalem. The text can also be sung to the Jewish folk tune associated with “The King of Glory Comes.”

The hymn tune TABLE GREATS (a play on “greatest” and “table grace”) is a setting for Steven Starke’s 8.7.8.7.8.7 Maundy Thursday text. This simple, singable tune gives voice to Starke’s reflection on the story of Jesus washing his disciples’ feet in the upper room.

    Piano accompaniment for congregational singing.

This beautiful hymn by James John Cummins had fallen into disuse until fairly recently. It covers all of life— depth of sin, temptation, ease and joy, sickness, and dying— and always brings us back to the prayer, “By your mercy, oh, deliver us, good Lord.”

“O Sacred Head, Now Wounded” is the quintessential Passion hymn. These descants can be played by a variety of treble or bass clef instruments, together or separately, and are also flexible in how they are used within the song. For example, I have used the descants as an extended introduction and brought them back on the final verse of singing. Email me for other transpositions that would be useful in your church.

During Lent 2020, Fuller Ave CRC did a series on the seven last words of Christ. Each week’s sermon was followed by a new song. These songs don’t restate the seven last words. Instead, they are true “hymns of reflection” that meditate, pray, or imagine what the Spirit might be saying to us through the scripture.
You can download a zipped file of all seven songs below or follow the links to hear, read about, and download each individual song:

This is the first in a series of songs on the seven last words of Christ. It is based on Luke 23:34: “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” With each of these songs, my goal is not to restate the words of Jesus but to let worshipers reflect on them. For this passage, I wanted to invite people to take to the posture of the repentant thief on the cross, offering a heartfelt confession.

“By Your Side” is song #2 in my Seven Last Words series. This one is based on Luke 23:43 “Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in paradise.” We understand what these words mean when Jesus speaks them to a criminal dying next to him on a cross, but what do they mean for us today? In this song, we respond to Christ’s words with dedication: “Yes, Lord, we want to be with you in life and death, in paradise or cross.”
