A while back I discovered the Brazilian congregational songwriting duo of Rubem Amorese and Toninho Zemuner. They write beautiful, singable, meaningful songs. In Portuguese. This is a translation of their song  “Adoração,” a simple and heartfelt song of dedication. Below is their original recording.

The beauty of this Swahili song is its simplicity. The lyrics are not deep and the music is not sophisticated–but it is heartfelt. It also leaves lots of room for a good leader to create new verses that fit the moment (“We are listening,” “We will follow,” etc).

Looking for a Christmas piece that’s a little off the beaten path? This beloved German Christmas carol has been newly translated and arranged. The choir parts are not at all difficult, and the anthem can be accompanied by piano alone. However, if you do have flute, recorder, guitar, or strings available, the music becomes absolutely exquisite.

Anthem for SATB choir, flute, recorder, classical guitar, and strings. Download includes score and parts; purchase price allows you to print as many copies as you need for your ensemble.

This energetic Guatemalan song first appeared in Global Songs for Worship (2010). Since then, I have created various arrangements that allow it to be led authentically in other ways. The piano accompaniment captures the rhythmic energy of the song. The choir, flute, and percussion arrangement is perfect for churches that have a flutist who likes a challenge!

This song sets the story of Isaiah 6 to a Rwandan melody. It gives us a picture of the angels in heaven singing, “Holy, holy, you are holy,” and the third verse reminds us of our hope to join believers from every nation with the angels in giving glory to God.

This hymn is a free download. If you sing this song in your church, please report its use to CCLI or OneLicense.

In 2019, Church of the Servant commissioned me to arrange a lovely Magnificat by Keur Moussa. The Keur Moussa community, which is something like the Taizé of Senegal, has developed its own style of singing that combines the beautiful austerity of Catholic chant with the insistent rhythms of West Africa. Trying to remain in the spirit of the original piece, this arrangement is complex, but not flashy; exciting, but still mesmerizing.

Arrangement for SATB choir, flute, strings, guitar, mbira, shakers, dumbek, and drum set. Purchase price includes full score, all instrumental parts, and permission to make multiple copies for choir.

A staple in African American churches, this chorus is especially fitting during communion, confession, or ministry time. This Just Add People! arrangement leaves lots of options, from a simple groove to more complex rhythms and modulations.

I was introduced to “Oče naš” by a woman who was taking ESL classes at Church of the Servant. She helped me find a recording of the song, gave me the meaning of each word of the original text, and even guided me through the Croatian pronunciation phonetically. I created a singing translation in English and arranged it for piano.

Rubem Amorese and Toninho Zemuner write beautiful congregational songs in their native Portuguese. Their song on Psalm 125, “Proteçao,” is a beautiful testament to the protection that surrounds God’s people.

By the Babylonian Rivers” is one of my favorite songs from Global Songs for Worship and one of my favorite Psalm settings in general. I decided that the line “Lord God, hear your lonely band” fairly demanded an instrumental interlude, so I wrote one.

Download includes piano accompaniment, interlude, SATB harmony, and second verse harmonization.
